August Character Interview
Patricia Parrington ~ August 22, 2026

Hello my lovely readers and fellow booklovers! For those of you new here, I, your space-loving host Patricia Parrington, have the pleasure of interviewing characters from books all over the world.
Today, Harper Evensong is here with us from the lower young adult science fantasy book Weave the Worlds by Norah Case. Norah is a small-town library director by day, science fantasy author by early morning, bookworm by night, and Christian, cat lady, and Star Wars fan all day every day. She aims for her stories to remind readers of who they are: sons and daughters of the King.
Meet Harper
Welcome to Fable Features! I’m excited to get to know you.
[Patricia smiles warmly and adjusts a checkered pillow on the orange suede couch.]
I’m curious: What’s a crazy concept you believed as a child?
[Harper waves.]
Hi Patricia, thanks for having me! This is a great question to start with, haha. The craziest thing I think I believed as a child was that my homeworld was flat! We call outer space the “Star Sea,” so my little head just assumed it was the same as the ocean on Arkron, but full of stars. Now that I’ve done some offworld travel, I can confidently say that Arkron is most definitely not flat but very round like the rest of the planets in the Exlenna.
“Star Sea” is such a perfect name for outer space. That’s funny you thought your homeworld was flat!
[Patricia grins then adjusts the mahogany skirt of her dress.]
Let’s switch from child Harper to now Harper. What would you say is your best physical feature?
[Harper gives a small laugh and taps her nose.]
My freckles! They’re a bit distinctive, which I suppose is good or bad depending on who you ask. My mother used to joke that my brother Pickett and I could have been twins if I’d spent more time inside like he did when we were little. But what can I say? I love being outside in the sun.
[Patricia nods in agreement.]
I spent a lot of time outside as well. Still do.
Tell me more about your brother! Do you guys get along?
Pickett is three years older than me. He studies with the Neherum, the warrior scholars who make it their mission to study and preserve the Exlenna. A lot of people ask why he’s not the heir to House Evensong and Arkron since he’s the oldest, but it’s because of Arkronen tradition. Our Accords say something along the lines of “Arkron shall be ruled by a woman since she was created to be a mother and a mother is tasked with nurturing her children, thus a woman would nurture the world as her child”—It’s more eloquent than I just made it sound haha. So it’s always the firstborn daughter who’s the heir. Lucky me. Anyway, I’d say that Pickett and I get along better now than we did when we were younger. I used to think he was sooooo stuck up and a total teacher’s pet, but I know now that he was just trying to carve a place for himself. He’s also one of the most fiercely loyal people I know—to his detriment sometimes. But it’s comforting to know that he’s always in my corner.
That is comforting to know he’s always gonna be there for you. I’m glad you get along better now!
Out of all your memories, what’s your favorite memory?
Oh, that’s hard! One that stands out is from when I was fourteen, a few months before I was sent to offworld for diplomatic training. My friend and I set up some fish traps in a pond on our property. I went to go empty them—we had a great haul that day! Anyway, I went traipsing inside to show my mother, like I usually did. I burst into her study holding my soggy bag of fish like it was a trophy—and didn’t realize that my aunt had just arrived.
[Harper adjusts her skirt and straightens in her seat.]
She’s our representative to the other worlds in the Exlenna. She fell out of her chair at the sight of me. Looking back, I’m sure she was mortified—the future queen of Arkron, dripping water all over the floor and a bag of dead fish in her hands! I think that was when she realized just how big of a job she had on her hands to train me, bless her.
That must’ve been a shock for sure!
[Patricia twirls her finger, as if signaling to reverse.]
Let’s go back a minute. You mentioned you’re the future queen of Arkron. How do you feel about that?
[Harper touches her tiara and sighs.]
It’s a responsibility that I don’t take lightly, but it’s still a struggle. I know how I would prefer to write my story, but this is the one that’s been written for me. I have to trust that there’s a reason for it, even if I don’t see it right now.
That is a big responsibility.
[Patricia gives her a sympathetic nod.]
On the topic of, well, hard topics, what is your greatest regret?
[Harper glances around and leans towards Patricia.]
Okay, this is a bit of a spoiler, so dear reader, proceed at your own risk. My greatest regret was losing my head on the Void and attacking the leaders of the Consortium with my storyweaving powers. Looking back, I know it wasn’t the smartest move because it had some significant consequences for me and Arkron. But at the time, it was the only way I could think of to get us all out of there.
Sometimes we get thrown in situations where we have to think fast. And sometimes that causes us to make mistakes. But that’s how we learn and grow, isn’t it?
[Patricia leans forward, green eyes shining with curiosity.]
Tell me more about your storyweaving powers! How do they work?
[Harper rubs her hands together and grins.]
I’m glad you asked! Basically, I can bring elements from stories to life. So let’s say I create a story with a sword; I could bring that sword into reality and use it. However, I have a finite amount of power to expend overall, so unless I wanted to burn myself out completely, I’d have to let it dissolve after a little while. My power can be used all the way up—forever—so I have to ration it very carefully, which is so hard! There’s also certain limits: for example, I can’t bring a human being to life or bring someone back from the dead. Only the Creator can craft souls.
That still sounds very powerful! I’d love to make a sword purely out of stories.
[Patricia pretends to swing a sword and laughs.]
Our next question is a bit more random: What animal gives the same vibe as you?
A dragon, I hope! Though I don’t think I’m that awe-inspiring. More realistically, I think maybe a hare. They’re small and fast and get to live out in the forests and grasslands. I’ve heard they can be mischievous creatures—at least they are in some of the stories I’ve read.
[Patricia considers Harper and nods slowly.]
I could see that.
Now on a more serious note, what would you give your life for?
My homeworld, Arkron.
[Harper briefly touches her crown again, pushing it higher onto her head.]
I’m the heir of House Evensong. It’s my duty to give my life for it.
I can tell you care deeply for Arkron. I have a feeling your homeworld will be safe with you leading it.
[Patricia adjusts the checkered pillow again.]
You’ve mentioned offworld travel. What place would you like to visit someday?
I would like to visit the other Outcast star cruisers in the Fringe, though I doubt my security detail would be game for that, haha. The Star’s Ransom was such an amazing place though—I hope I get to spend a little more time there in the future.
Hmm yeah, you might have your hands full trying to convince your security detail of that! Perhaps, though, you will get to visit the Star’s Ransom at some point in the future.
[Patricia sighs.]
Well, we are almost out of time. I have one last question for you: What’s a phrase you’d like to have etched on your tombstone?
It’s just one word for me: “Beloved.” That was a really important lesson I had to learn recently. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if you’re a princess, storyweaver, farmer, wife, shopkeeper—insert whatever roles you ascribe to yourself—the most important thing about you is that you’re loved by the Maker.
Well said. Thank you so much for chatting with me today! I wish you the best of luck as you take on the role as queen of Arkron.
End of interview.
