Hello my lovely readers and fellow book-lovers! For those of you new here, I, your nature-loving host Patricia Parrington, have the pleasure of interviewing characters from books all over the world.

Today, Shinichi Miyamoto is here with us from the adult military thriller novel Shadow on the Snow by Jade Black. Jade is an often pretentious but always soulful multi-genre author. She is also an artist, composer, game developer, and hobby miniature builder.

Meet Shinichi

Welcome to Fable Features! Oh, hold on a second—I can tell the sun’s getting in your eyes.

[Patricia walks to the windows and draws the blinds. She returns to the orange suede couches next to a small coffee table and sits down.]

Very sunny today, huh? Anyhoo. I’m excited to get to know you! Do you have any family? What are they like?

[Shinichi looks down and bites his lip slightly.]

Kind of an awkward one to start on. I have no idea. They might have died when I was very young, they might have abandoned me. I don't have any memory of them at all.

[Patricia’s eyebrows pinch together.]

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that. That must’ve been hard growing up not knowing who your parents were or what happened to them. I can tell this is a tough topic for you, so let’s change gears.

They say our living spaces can tell a lot about who we are. What does your home or room look like?

[He smiles.]

A lot different to when I bought it. It's a little place, three rooms, and it was a wreck when I first saw it. The agent couldn't believe I wanted it. I had to rip out most of the floor and loft boards. Well, I didn't have to rip out some of the loft but the carpentry work for the roof was beautiful. It's still a bit empty in there, but I have a rug and a couple of tapestries to put up, so it's cozy. The sort of place you'd like to come back to after a hike, which is all I want.

That does sound cozy! You mention hiking. Is that a hobby you like to do?

I love hiking. I've always loved it. When I was a kid, I used to sneak out of school to go and explore the mountains. I'd make camp and be out all night sometimes, hunting for dinner and everything. Ten Moons is my favorite area to hike in. The views you get up there are pretty special, especially when it's foggy.

Hiking is such a fun activity. I’ll have to try out the Ten Moons hike! I’m a fan of beautiful views.

Oh, I like this next question: What’s a scent you will never forget?

Good question. I wouldn't call it unforgettable so much as easily recognizable and sets my instincts blaring, but the smell when someone lights a fire using damp pine wood. Very distinct. Seen too many people in a tight spot do that in the mountains.

That is a very distinct smell.

[Patricia cocks her head slightly.]

I’m curious—do you have any enemies right now?

[Shinichi quirks an eyebrow.]

Just a few. It's hard not to with the war looming. I know most of them will be following orders and have a lot less flexibility on that than I do, but if they're going to invade my homeland then they're an enemy of mine.

That’s fair. What’s this war all about, if you don’t mind discussing it?

It's been brewing for so long I'm sure there's all sorts caught up in it by now. The big issues everyone talks about are land and famine. It sounds bad over the border, but I'm not having that this is the best option.

Ahh yeah, I’ve heard of many wars that have been fought over similar things. I’m sorry to hear you’re caught up in all of that.

What’s a lie you’ve had to combat?

It doesn't matter where you come from.

Something people don't often know about Hyukese orphans is that they don't have a last name. When it comes up, you generally think of one on the spot, unless you've thought about it already like I did. Happens if you see it happen the hard way.

[He gives a tiny headshake.]

It doesn't end there though. If you're trying to buy a house or open a bank account, the paperwork's different. It's more complicated and people don't want to deal with it. I don't know when that's going to end.

[Patricia nods quietly.]

That’s the hard truth, isn’t it? It does matter sometimes where you come from—or at least that you know your background.

[He nods.]

On a lighter note, what’s your favorite summer activity?

I'm not a summer man. Give me ankle-deep snow any day. That said, I like sitting outside at the bar when it's warm enough. The travelling acts don't often come all the way up to the mountains until summer, so you get some sweet Malassaun or Quiyen blues sometimes. Pairs well with a light cocktail. Of course they're all still wearing coats, which is pretty funny.

That sounds so fun!

[A grin creeps across Patricia’s face.]

Okay, here’s a fun one for you: If you randomly got arrested, what would you guess the reason would be?

[Shinichi chuckles.]

I'd love to see a copper or three try. Probably for getting a little too honest with them.

[Patricia chuckles as well.]

You sound very confident in your skills. I’d love to hear more about that and how you learned those skills.

I'm an assassin.

[Patricia’s green eyes widen.]

In the military, don't look at me like that.

My apologies! Your answer just caught me off guard. Please, go on.

I joined up when I was fifteen and fast streamed into assassin training straight away. I wouldn't even need a weapon to get them out of my way. Tell you what, I'd take theirs in the fight just because I can.

That would certainly surprise and intimidate them. Imagine, this seemingly vulnerable, unarmed man approaching you, charging after him with your weapon drawn, then suddenly realizing the man is holding your own sword to your throat.

[Patricia chuckles and shakes her head.]

Remind me not to get on your bad side.

Let’s change gears, though, and dive into a deeper question: What do you feel like is your life’s purpose?

I like to think I'm a philosophical man, but I can't say I know the answer to this one. I'd like to make it into Command, though I don't think that counts.

[He pauses, subconsciously holding his breath.]

There's someone I'm yet to meet, I think. I don't know, ask me after the war I guess.

I’ll take you up on that. Sometimes we aren’t sure what exactly our purpose is and that’s okay! It’s different for everyone.

[Patricia stands.]

Thank you so much for coming here today, Shinichi. It was a pleasure getting to know you and I hope the war ends soon.

Good to meet you too. I'll do my best. Next time I'll take you ’round my neck of the woods.
